Coaching Responsibilities

 

  • Learn and adhere to the MBA Mission Statement and Philosophy.
  • Know the rules of the game, specifically pertaining to the league and age that you are coaching.
  • Attend all try-outs for your team and rate players on an unbiased basis.
  • Be responsible for equipment and uniforms.
  • Dedicate time to practicing and foster a consistent coaching approach
  • Emphasize player development and working hard over winning.

Drills

  • Stress repetition and be critical of doing things the right way
  • Promote drills that gets multiple balls in hands of kids – use all baskets; play 3 on 3
  • Conditioning via drills; no sprints unless dribbling or shuffling
  • Simulate game conditions and incorporate planned offense and defense
  • Stress shooting – minimum 20% of every practice time

Code of conduct

All coaches will strictly adhere to our official coaching codes of conduct.  They will be required to sign a code of conduct form before participating in any coaching activities associated with our basketball program:

 

  • Be fair and offer praise to players when deserved.
  • Never verbally or physically abuse players.
  • Communicate with players and parents and remind both of the mission statement, philosophy and goals of the MBA.
  • Consider a parent meeting pre and mid-season.
  • Encourage feedback.
  • Do not argue with referees.
  • Promote sportsmanship and do not tolerate improper behavior from players, regardless of situation.
  • Ensure the safety of your players.

Concussion Awareness

Keeping children and teens healthy and safe is always a top priority. The MBA has adopted the CDC guidelines for concussions. Please review the following website for educational material regarding concussion awareness.

Whether you are a parent, youth sports coach, school coach, school professional, or health care provider, this site will help you recognize, respond to, and minimize the risk of concussion or other serious brain injury.

 

Please note the following MBA policies

1. Players who appear to have suffered a head injury or concussion will immediately be removed from participation in practice or games

2. Return-to- Play policy: The MBA will require any player who has sustained a head injury or who is suspected of having sustained a head injury to visit a licensed health care professional for evaluation and clearance. Please present the Head coach a doctor’s note to return to play.

SafeKids Program For Madison Basketball Association

The following constitute the policies of Madison Basketball Association with regard to awareness and prevention of abuse within our organization.

  • Madison Basketball Association is committed to provide a safe environment and to prevent child abuse and sexual misconduct.
  • Madison Basketball Association will make every reasonable effort to ensure that every person involved in coaching/training a sport activity in our organization will abide by the SafeKids guidelines.
  • Madison Basketball Association will make every reasonable effort to exclude any adult with a legally documented history of child abuse/molestation or any other conviction or record that would bring unnecessary risk to the health and safety of the participants of this organization.
  • Madison Basketball Association will perform a criminal background check on every person applying for a position at our organization.
  • Madison Basketball Association will take appropriate action on all allegations of child abuse and/or sexual misconduct. All allegations will be reported immediately to the authorities for investigation and will cooperate fully with any such investigation.

 

The following represent the preventive measures of our organization with regard to abuse:

  • Physical, mental, and verbal abuse of any of the participants, coaches, managers, employees, volunteers involved in our sponsored activities is not permitted.
  • Inappropriate touching of any kind is forbidden.
  • We agree to provide more than one adult working at or overseeing every activity. If a child needs special attention (one -on- one training or an individual meeting), it will be handled with the assistance or presence of another adult.
  • Coaches/trainers should not socialize with the participants outside of the sponsored activities of the organization.
  • Coaches/trainers should never ride alone with a child or participant in the car. Procedures will be established for coaches to follow in the event a participant is stranded at an activity.
  • Parents are encouraged to attend sponsored activities

1st and 2nd Grade Curriculum

Ball Handling

Stationary

  • Right hand/left hand dribble
  • Stationary front changes (crossover)

continually form the letter “V”; use fingertips to control dribble and create front change; ball below hip level; ball close to legs(shins)

  • One-handed V’s

front of legs with right hand only (then left hand only); right side of body; left side of body

  • High/Low on command

alternate 3 high dribbles and 3 low dribbles; left and right; maintain athletic position

  • Dribble tag

in restricted area with boundaries; players must maintain dribble while being chased;
player becomes “it” when dribble is stopped or player steps out of bounds

Half Court

  • Right hand (then left hand)

dribble to half court; jump stop at half court and when returning to starting point; eyes up
on coach displaying different numbers of fingers

  • Hesitation dribble

ball in right hand; stop at halfway point and chop feet while keeping dribble alive; dribble
to half court with same hand; left hand drill coming back; coaches can stand at halfway
point encouraging hesitation move

  • Simple front changes

players walk on angle to their right (up court) for three dribbles and then make V to left
hand; this is followed by three left hand dribbles while walking on angle to their left

  • Front change/crossover

players jog on angle to their right (up court) for three dribbles and then make V to left hand; this is followed by three left hand dribbles while walking on angle to their left; players plant outside foot to change direction and initiate crossover and increase speed
 

  • Hop-back and go

player dribbles on angle to right side for three dribbles, then hops twice with ball in same hand (right) tucked behind knee; after hop-back player switches direction; repeat with left hand

  • Two ball drills: hands in rhythm; alternate  hands; double –handed v’s; figure 8’s

 

 

Half Court

 

  • Right hand (then left hand)

dribble to half court; jump stop at half court and when returning to starting point; eyes up

 

 

  • Hesitation dribble

ball in right hand; stop at halfway point and chop feet while keeping dribble alive; dribble to half court with same hand; left hand drill coming back

 

 

  • Front change/crossover

players dribble on angle to their right (up court) for three dribbles and then make V to left hand; this is followed by three left hand dribbles while moving on angle to their left

 

 

  • Through the leg

same directions as front change; with ball in right hand, player leaves feet to kick left foot forward while driving ball on bounce through left leg and into left hand; then reverse drill

 

 

  • Hop back and Go

player dribbles on angle to right side the hops back twice with ball in same hand (right) tucked behind knee;  player switches direction with front change or through the legs dribble and repeats drill with left hand; continue to alternate until half court

 

  • Two ball dribbling

change direction, alternate balls, hopback, etc.
 

  • ** 1/2 court/full court vs. live defense; must be part of ballhandling drill segment
